A pediatric dentist is one who has spent extra time pursuing dental education. After four years of dental school, and three years as a general dentist Dr. Purcell received two additional years of special training, working with children, teenagers and special needs patients. Dr. Purcell's office is limited to children and young adults and his office has been specifically designed for these patients.

Pediatric dentists are trained not only in the special dental needs of children, but they also receive training in the emotional and social aspects of childhood.

Parents who feel strongly about taking their children to a pediatrician should take their children to a pediatric dentist for the same reasons.

Early oral care encourages healthy dental habits that can last for a lifetime. Because we would like to see cavity-free children with bright smiles, we begin seeing children by 12 months of age as recommended by the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry.

BEFORE YOUR FIRST VISIT

Good dental care is an important part of your child's overall health. Here are some tips to help prepare your child for his first visit:

  • Emphasize the positive aspects of good dental care. Tell your child that visiting the dentist will help keep his smile bright and cavity free.

  • Expect your child to have a pleasant experience. Say that Dr. Purcell is very gentle when he works.

EMERGENCIES

Please call our office immediately in the event of a dental emergency. The first 30 minutes are critical.

If a permanent tooth is knocked out, rinse it off gently but do not scrub it. Replace it in the tooth socket if possible. If you cannot replace it, put it in a glass of milk or wrap it in plastic with the child's saliva to maintain moisture.

We will rearrange our schedule to accommodate the injured child, and we' know you will understand if this happens during your scheduled appointment.

Dr. Purcell carries a pager and may be reached after hours by calling the office number.

PAYMENT

We request payment for the first time office visits at the time of service.

On secondary visits, if you have dental insurance you are required to pay 20% and provide our office with an insurance form or necessary billing information. If you do not have insurance, full payment is due the day of service.
